Polymeric rubber MUGA maintenance is vital if you want your surface to last a long time. To keep a multi-sport flooring performing at its best a regular inspection and polymeric rubber MUGA maintenance programme is vital. A good cleaning programme should include checks daily, weekly and every six months.

Things to look out for include -

  • Vandalism
  • Damage
  • Wear
  • Stains
  • Leaves
  • Litter
  • Weeds
  • Moss
  • Algae

as well as shoe stains. In the instance of any leaves, weeds or pine cones appearing upon the EPDM rubber surfacing it's important that these are removed quickly. If left for a length of time they can begin to rot and form a drain inhibiting skin on the surface that would cause the flooring to hold water and become a perfect habitat for the growth of weeds, moss and algae on the area.

This can lead to the polymeric rubber surfacing lose its anti-slip qualities and becoming unsafe. Dirt and debris like this may be easily removed with a light jet wash containing a weed moss and algae treatment along with a stiff brush.

Sports Court Stain Removal

In the instance of a small stain appearing, an effective method to remove it from the surfacing should be using a cloth with a solution of hot water and household detergent such as washing up liquid, however, if the stain or mark is chewing gum this should be removed using a freezing aerosol. Even with the highest maintenance and inspection programme, it's possible that weed will appear around the surface, larger weeds may be removed by hand whilst others can be taken off using a domestic weed and algae killer. Please note special care should be taken on areas used by small children.

In the winter months, it is quite possible that snow and ice may appear on your court, snow and ice are not harmful to rubber surfaces as they tend to melt and drain through. Snow may be removed from the surface using brushes or rubber edged scrapers, it's not advisable to use scrapers with a metal or plastic edge as these can cause damage to the polymeric sports surfacing.

It should also be noted that chemical and solvent de-icers should not be used on polymeric the flooring neither should salt and grit as these can stain and damage the floor. Specially designed polymeric surfacing de-icers can be purchased if you fill in our contact form and let us know what you need.

Polymeric Surfacing MUGAs Maintenance Flash Paint Coating

When budgeting for a polymeric multi sport facility, such as a MUGA it is always wise to count a 'flash' coat into your costing. A flash coat is the renewal of the anti-slip colour coating upon the surface, not only does a flash paint course renew the anti-slip qualities of for rubberised sports facility it also makes the flooring look as good as new.

A polymeric surfacing is designed using a mixture of black EPDM rubber granules and a specially sports formulated polyurethane binder, the surfacing is then coated in a polyurethane anti-slip colour coating to meet the desired anti-slip rating. The reason behind the surfacing being designed in this way so you see when the surface begins to lose its anti-slip quality because the black EPDM beneath the anti-slip coat will become more visible allowing you to act quickly to get your surface back within the anti-slip rating of your chosen sport.

A recommended time to install a flash paint coat to your polymeric MUGA venue is around 12 months after the installation, this coat again can be applied in a number of different colours including blue, red and green and will usually last the original coatings as it will have the initial coat to act as a base coat and foundation layer.

Regular maintenance is important for all kinds of outdoor surfacing and the surrounding areas, and it's great if you can complete proactive cleaning yourself. We will send out rubber wetpour repair kits which enable you to complete minor repairs if you've got damage to a rubberised play surface.
